Event of the Week 9.28.11! Fashion Exhibits
Five Must-See Fashion Exhibits!
Here is something to enrich your knowledge of fashion that is entertaining, educational and beneficial for you as students! You may run into someone in the fashion industry or you may run into some fellow classmates, either way.. ITS SOMETHING TO CHECK OUT!
“Daphne Guinness”
Indulge your voyeuristic tendencies at this exhibit, which lets visitors peek into the closet of the British beer heiress. Museum at FIT curator Valerie Steele collaborated with Guinness to select more than 100 pieces from the fashion plate’s private collection, with items from designers such as Alexander McQueen, Chanel and Gareth Pugh on display. Some of the smallest items make the largest impression, such as a pair of red Nina Ricci pumps that are 11 inches high—but have no real heel.
See it now!
“Fiber Futures: Japan’s Textile Pioneers”
High-tech fabrics showcase the diversity of textile design in this exhibit, featuring work by 30 artists. The sculptural pieces incorporate both delicate and sturdy materials, including silk, cotton, paper and even delicate strands of stainless steel. Although the pieces stand alone as art, many of the innovations presented have practical applications: for example, Jun’ichi Arai’s super-thin synthetic materials have been used in clothes by Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto.
See it now! Japan Society, 333 E 47th St between First and Second Aves (212-832-1155, japansociety.org). Tue–Thu 11am–6pm; Fri 11am–9pm; Sat, Sun 11am–5pm. $12, seniors and students $10, members and children under 16 free. Fri 16–Dec 18.The Museum at FIT, Seventh Ave at 27th St (212-217-4558, fitnyc.edu/museum). Tue–Fri noon–8pm, Sat 10am–5pm; free. Fri 16–Jan 7.

“Harper’s Bazaar: A Decade of Style”
Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey gets a mini-retrospective with this show, which features 30 images taken for the magazine since her tenure began in 2001. The chosen shots illustrate how the publication merges fashion, pop culture and high design, such as a photo of a leather-clad Naomi Campbell sitting atop an alligator. Others, like a Warholesque portrait of the model Stephanie Seymour, reveal how fine art inspires the magazine’s spreads.
See it now! International Center of Photography, 1133 Sixth Ave at 43rd St (212-857-0000, icp.org). Tue–Thu, Sat, Sun 10am–6pm; Fri 10am–8pm. $12, seniors and students $8, children under 12 and members free. Through Jan 8.

“Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones”
Creative toppers get top billing in this show, which was curated by London milliner Stephen Jones. His own creations—including pieces made for members of the royal family, as well as for celebrities like Mick Jagger and Sarah Jessica Parker—will be on view alongside historical showstoppers such as a 12th-century Egyptian fez. The exhibit also features work by Jones’s contemporaries, such as Philip Treacy, who designed Princess Beatrice’s bow-shaped hat for the royal wedding—thus spawning countless memes.
See it now! Bard Graduate Center Gallery, 18 W 86th St between Central Park West and Columbus Ave (212-501-3023, bgc.bard.edu/gallery). Tue, Wed, Fri–Sun 11am–5pm; Thu 11am–8pm. $7, seniors and students $5, Thu 5–8pm free. Thu 15–Apr 15.

Wearable art is the focus of this exhibit, which shows off baubles created by 128 virtuosos (including the titular legends, along with Max Ernst, Frank Stella and Yoko Ono). Some of the miniature sculptures represent their creators’ better-known works—a platinum pendant by Jeff Koons is shaped like one of his inflatable bunnies, while a brooch created by Roy Lichtenstein evokes his cartoonish Pop Art paintings.

Interview: SGA VICE PRESIDENT!
Get to know LIM College's VICE PRESIDENT Kaleigh Connors. Shes fun, smart and always looks her best!
- Nickname: People always have a difficult time saying my name for some reason; so most people just call me “Kale.”
- Where are you originally from? I am originally from Holmdel, New Jersey and no one in my town tans, fist pumps, or GTLs.
- Favorite designer: SOCIETY OF LES is my favorite the line; Susan Siegel is the designer for the brand line. SOCIETY OF LES is a contemporary line of luxury knit tees and tops. I currently intern for her the designer and it has been the best experience. Susan has been such a great mentor to me and has taught me so much, I couldn’t be luckier.
- Favorite accessory: I LOVE accessories! My favorite accessory is bracelets, I collect them. Every time I go somewhere or something big happens in my life I buy a bracelet to remember that time. I wear as many bracelets as possible I love to layer them! I am also a big fan of scarves, layering necklaces, and sunglasses.
- Shopping tip/secret: My shopping tip is to also check out the sale rack! Also, I only make a purchase if I am totally in love with the item and I never buy anything just because everyone else has it.
- Why you love Lim College? I love LIM because it is my home away from home! I feel so comfortable here and love the intimate environment. I truly believe that LIM has and will continue to help me succeed with my career in fashion.
- How has sag helped you/inspired/changed/affected your life, you, your time, your experience -how do you market yourself online? I.e. Facebook, twitter, linked in, blogs, internship blog? SGA has really helped me open up and become more involved within the LIM community. I have met so many people through being involved in SGA and have been able to experience so many things. I try to truly represent myself properly on Facebook and Twitter. It is very important to brand yourself properly through social media outlets. On Facebook I don’t like to have any inappropriate pictures or have any crude posts. Twitter is my outlet to be funny and post things that are currently on my mind.
“I like my money right where I can see it... hanging in my closet.”
